It used to be said that “The is customer is the most important person in a business. That no longer seems to be the case in today’s modern world of retail sales and other industries that rely heavily on customer interaction. Gone are the days of pulling into a Texaco station and having a team of attendants surround your car to fill your gas, check your tire pressure, wash your window, check your oil and engine belts. In fact, have you been to one of the major retail chains or big box stores lately? Ever try to get help from someone…anyone, who can get you that lonely item sitting up on the top shelf? It’s nearly impossible! Whatever happed to Customer Service?
When I was a boy in Philadelphia, there was a department store named Lit Brothers. I used to stop there on my way home from school all the time. Man, what a place. There was a friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable person in every department. You never had to go searching for them either. They were always just…there. Not standing on top of you giving you a hard sell, but always around if you had any questions of needed help. Let’s face it. The days of Lit Brothers and Gimbals are over. Every time I turn on the news, I hear about how much these big chain stores are hurting. Many of them on the verge. I wonder if it’s because there is such a decline in good customer service?
